Council officials in Greater Manchester are drawing up plans to ban the sale of cheap alcohol as they try to cut down on excessive drinking, improve health and cut hospital admissions across the region by up to 5,000.
The plan would outlaw the sale alcohol for less than 50p per unit as well as ending pub loyalty-card schemes, with anyone who breaks the rules being hit with a £500 fine.
Under the scheme a bottle of wine would cost a minimum of £4.50 whilst a six pack of lager will cost at least £6.

The Association of Greater Manchester (Agma) and representatives from the councils of Cheshire, Merseyside, Warrington will meet on Friday to discuss the first draft of the by-law.
