The Ultimate Crush
Now here’s a little romantic special for you as seen on the 8th February show.

  • 3-4 chunks canned pineapple
  • 1 the juice of a wedge of lime,
  • 25ml/1fl oz dark rum
  • 25ml/1fl oz cherry brandy
  • 2 tsp grenadine
  • freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice
  • freshly squeezed pineapple juice

Put the pineapple chunks and lime juice into the cocktail shaker along with the, rum, cherry brandy and grenadine and shake  - you should have a lovely pinkish liquid. Get a ‘babysham’ style glass full of ice and pour over.
Finish off by filling up the rest of to glass with the pink grapefruit juice, and finally the pineapple juice.

Believe me it’s absolutely gorgeous and melt any one’s heart

Ok so you may have a basic idea, but how do you actually shake the perfect cocktail? And yes, there is abit more to it that opening up a bottle and a flick of the wrist!
Shaking a Cocktail is the most basic skill in bartending.

There are two top notch ‘the business’ types of shakers.
Preferred by the pros :-
Boston shakers
These are made up of a tapered, stainless steel can and a smaller tapered
glass
Standard shakers
A large can, a lid that contains a strainer and a tight-fitting cap.

Whichever shaker you use, shaking should be done with, one hand on either end and vigorous enough that the
ingredients whizz round all of the shaker.

I found this recipe in a really great cocktail book, aptly named The Book of Cocktails.  It’s more of a cordial drink, with a bit of a kick.

Ingredients:

1 part malibu

1 part blackcurrant cordial

ice

lemonade

coconut - grated or sliced

Pour malibu blackcurrant over the ice in a glass.  Fill with lemonade and stir. Garnish and enjoy with a straw

This is a really sweet cocktail, not one to drink all night but more of an after-meal drink or end of night drink.  It’s more like a dessert really.  Oh, and sin of all sins, it’s non-alcoholic.  Ideal for when you’ve had a few big nights out and you’re going through a ‘I’m never going to drink again’ period

Ingredients:

1 part peppermint cordial

4 parts cream

grated chocolate

2 chocolate sticks

cracked and crushed ice

Put the ice and peppermint and cream in a shaker.  Shake till frosty.  Strain into large wine glass.  Add crushed ice.  Sprinkle with grated chocolate.  Garnish with chocolate sticks.

How could I not write about my namesake?

Get the ingredients out:

1 part Galliano

orange juice

slice of orange

Pour vodka and galliano into a glass.  Top up with orange juice. Garnish and serve.  Hurrah!

Here are the ingredients for a tequila sunrise:

1 part tequila

4 parts orange juice

2 dashes of Grenadine (the red stuff!)

slice of orange

1 cherry (if you like that sort of thing)

ice cubes

Put ice in a glass - normally a highball one, but hey, who’s fussy? - pour in the tequila, pour in the orange juice, add the grenadine and garnish as you wish.

Pour them in carefully to achieve the sunset effect - then stir before you drink or you’ll get pure tequila…

Here’s one you might not have heard of.  Nice name, not my cup of tea, but those who like it seem to like it a lot and that’s good enough for me.

Ingredients:

1 part light run

1 part melon liqueur

1 part vodka

cracked and cubed ice (or any ice, who cares?)

lemonade

garnish - watermelon / cherry

Combine rum, liqueur, vodka and cracked ice in shaked.  Shake.  Pour into glass (goblets seem to be the things for this one).  Add cubed ice and top up with lemonade.  Garnish and serve.  Ta da!

Long Island Iced TeaWell, I figured I’d kick things off with one of my favourite cocktails. This isn’t a sweet one, which are the kind I normally go for, and it’s a real killer - BUT - it’s easy to make at home and it’s one of those cocktails where it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the best brands to hand. After all, keeping a fully stocked cocktail bar at home can be expensive.

As the piccie shows, it should be served in a highball glass, with a garnish of lemon or lime.

Ingredients:

10 ml vodka

10 ml tequila (I never compromise on this one, Jose Cuervo all the way, preferably gold)

10 ml rum

10 ml gin

10 ml triple sec

75 ml sours

Shake all the above, pour into a glass of ice and add some cola

Cheers!
